  1. Okay, 1) that is amazing. I love those and I think there is an Entner bakery near an U-Bahn that I use a lot, but 2) that isn't proper German, is it? Or is it some strange Franken business?

  2. Yup, Fränkisch.

    -la is a Franconian-style diminutive, like -chen, or more directly, -lein in standard German. Oddly, it's not listed here among many other regional dialects: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminutive#German You see it in the Franconian word for “Brötchen” as well: Weckla (which Oberpfälzer and Niederbayern refer to as Semmeln).

    Dooch = Tag. Very often you see a switcheroo of voiced and unvoiced consonants in dialectical German versus “Hochdeutsch” (which I hesitate to refer to as “High German” due to the ambiguity there — see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_German for more on that) and a broadening or exaggeration of the vowels (and all across the South, 'ah' tends to shift toward 'oh'). Therefore D-OO-CH refers directly to T-A-G.

    Hörnla Dooch = Hörnlein Tag = Croissantito* Day


    *”Croissantito” sounds much cuter than “little crescent roll,” no?

  3. And articles like those make me completely hopeless that I will ever learn to speak German. Just when you think you have a handle on one thing….

    But yes croissantito sounds much cuter…. very sweet. Haha.
